Roots of Hostel Moravia

Discover the history that lives within our walls.

Our hostel is located in a historic building that was once home to the famous Hotel Moravia. Built at the prominent corner of St. Čech Square and Nádražní Street between 1898 and 1899, the building has always held strategic significance. Hotel Moravia was founded by Václav Kučera and his wife Anna, and since its opening on April 1, 1899, it provided shelter to travelers from all over Europe, including distinguished guests such as Archduke Eugen of Habsburg and the well-known traveler Hanslian.

In 1933, Hotel Moravia underwent a major modernization under the leadership of its new owner, Jaroslav Frankl, an experienced hotelier who had worked in prestigious European hotels. The building was equipped with central heating, hot and cold running water, concrete floors, and modern refrigeration systems for the restaurant and cellars.

At the same time, the number of rooms was increased, the interiors were completely renovated, and a new bar with a gaming room was established. This reconstruction shaped the hotel’s current appearance—an elegant facade with horizontal cornices, balconies on the central corner, and grand pillars that give the building its unique character.

After years of serving various purposes, the building is now returning to its original function as a place for travelers. The hostel is undergoing continuous renovations and welcomes guests from all over the world.

The historic spaces are an ideal retreat for tourists who want to explore Ostrava, as well as for international students looking for comfortable and affordable accommodation. Come and discover the charm of a place where history meets cozy comfort.
